The difference between coaching and mentoring is not always understood
Many people may not pause to reflect on the difference between these two powerful personal growth opportunities. Neither do many understand how the tasks of coach or mentor differ from training or teaching. Both of course are very empathetic to the needs of individuals , as they strive for growth and fulfilment in their lives . Both, therefore, also require knowledge and experience and a degree of, probably, inate insight , in addition to other special skills. The coach however endeavours only to encourage the identification of goals and to accelerate achievement ,while the mentor only communicates desired skills and a degree of necessary knowledge.
‘Side tracking’ of the real purpose of a coaching session.
Coaches are frequently side-tracked down the mentoring path and often find it difficult to avoid disappointment for clients when they resist the temptation to be diverted . Mentors, too ,are often in a situation in which they may find themselves coaching ,perhaps ,although not always , without the skills required. A particular mentoring task is often also skills or industry specific : and lack of client or mentor personal knowledge may cause some difficulty for the mentor.
